Rom Coms: Romantic Comedies. We laugh we cry we leave with “oh how I wish” thoughts.
But I gotta say beyond your timeless classic rom coms, this new generation of films is really applying pressure.
Don’t worry I have examples as perusal 😉 These are just a few my faves 🤩🤩🍿
Henry Golding Staying Golden
Most of us know that our first intro to Mr. Henry Golding was in one of the best and gorgeous looking films: Crazy Rich Asians.
He was a true dream guy, I’m talkin health, wealth, and good skin 🤩 jk
But his character bought warmth to the Asian culture which is usually seen on screen as the opposite. He also had a dazzling smile and LEGENDARY actress playing his Mom.
My favorite part about this movie is we really get to see how love can change people and how people have no control over that.
You should also check out his Christmas Rom com called Last Christmas and he’s in another recent film but we’ll get to that one shortly 🎄🎁
Black and Beautiful Love
The amount of super fun, hilarious, and romantic Black Rom Coms is way too many for this post! So let me highlight my dream Black Rom Coms!!🤩🤩
Jumping The Broom
This time it’s Girl meets Boy by bumping her car into him and then we fast forward to Boy proposing to Girl in front of the NY MET with EL Debarge(look him up) singing how perfect of a woman she is. NEED👏🏾 I 👏🏾SAY 👏🏾MORE👏🏾
Two ICONIC and LEGENDARY Actresses playing the newlyweds mothers.
All of the comedy and fun is when we see two families from two different backgrounds collide for love. But what love teaches us here is that, not every painting is put on the wall perfectly. You will also learn a little history from the title of the film.
Now of course a lot of rom com movies give the female perspective. I believe that slowly and surely the male perspective on love via vulnerability is making a lane. A movie that I feel really shows the Black Male Perspective on love is The Brothers.
Not to mention the cast consist of some lovely chocolate men, who, bring completely different personalities to the table.
Each character is at different stages in their life when it comes to love. There’s the Married One, The Soon to Be Married One, The Looking for THE ONE one, and The Sleeps Around One.
However what they learn is that love can test you and only you can answer the question of fight or flight? Along with realizing that love is forgiving and comes in many forms.
Don’t worry this one has tons of laughs as well, D.L. Hughley and Bill Bellamy at the helm 💐😂
✨Sidenote✨: Love that each character was a man of good wealth with great jobs in fields that at the time, black people were not highlighted in. ✊🏾✊🏾
At this point you’re probably wondering, why holidays aren’t mentioned…no? Well now
you are. That also brings me to my last favorite BLACK and BEAUTIFUL Rom Com that’s set around Christmas time.
The Preacher’s Wife
A remake from its original namesake, The Bishops Wife, but this one is breathtakingly 90s and warm, and very Black 🤩🤩🎄
Heavy Hitting Cast: Courtney B. Vance(Lovecraft Country), Whitney Houston(Waiting to Exhale), Denzel Washington(You pick this time).
Our storyteller Jeremiah tells us of the year an Angel(Denzel Washington) came to help.
His mother(Whitney Houston) cut him off from sugared cereal, that’s from the movie.
Our preacher(Courtney B. Vance) is blinded by fulfilling the needs of his church and congregation he forgets what it’s like to be just Henry and love his wife.
So with our Angel(again, Denzel Washington) lending a hand, Henry makes some serious revelations and realizes the true meaning of love. That, while unconditional, there can be conditions as to how much you share of yourself to help others. Also not to take the ones you love for granted.
The Preacher’s Wife is a timeless Holiday Rom Com that never fails to bring joy, laughter, and genuine spirit to my heart ❤️
Ok so remember back at the top when I said we would touch on a new rom com that has become my fav with Henry Golding…?
Well buckle up buttercups because I can tell you, this particular role of his will surprise you.
First off he’s not the lead but he is intriguing 🤩
Secondly, he interacts with our leading lady: You know her, love her, and could be a little jealous of her, Mrs. Grey herself DAKOTA JOHNSON!! *insert crowd noise 😂
Her new film on Netflix is called Persuasion. It’s got Bridgerton vibes in terms of setting, costume, and language but way more hilarious.
The fresh take I love the most is how much the 4th wall is broken and the fact we get to see that in a moment of vulnerability(I’ve never seen that done).
While the most annoying character the MOST hilarious character is Mary, who is the sister of our leading lady. Her lines take brutal honesty to a more funnier level, while showing how Mary has a funny way to love.
In a time where class was everything Anna learns that heart and love is stronger than rank.
Don’t want to talk too much about Persuasion but you can catch it on Netflix NOW!!
I hope you’ve enjoyed our romantic journey through a few of my faves and along the way learned about some new ones to add to your TBW list 🤩😂
Make sure to drop some of your faves in the comments and let me know a topic you’d be interested in and I’ll try to match some films with it!
